We will start our tour with a scenic drive past Kadriorg Park to the Song Festival Grounds featuring a natural amphitheatre that seats 200,000 music lovers. Then the drive continues to the Olympic Yachting Complex in Pirita, the base for sailing events in the 1980 Olympics, where we will have a picture stop. We will pass the 600 years old ruins of St Briggite Convent and then continue to Tallinn's Old Town, the best preserved old town in northern Europe and is the UNESCO World Heritage Sight.
We will leave our vehicle at Tall Herman Tower and take a walk up to the Toompea Hill. It is considered to be the birthplace of Tallinn and is the highest point in Old Town. You will enjoy a picturesque panorama of the Lower Town with its tall gothic spires and the red tiled roofs. We will walk through the Palace Square and view the Baroque Toompea Castle, the seat for the Estonian Parliament.
Next you guide will invite you to visit the magnificent Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, filled with golden icons and mosaics. Our walking tour will continue to Tallinn's medieval cobblestone streets to visit the Gothic Dome Church, also known as St. Mary's Cathedral. Then we will make our way towards St Nicholas church where, if you wish, your guide will provide you with an inside tour (optional). The church was founded by 200 merchants in 1230. It keeps many treasures from the Middle Age among the others, Bernt Nokte's painting Dance of Death.
Then we will descend to the Lower town along the Pikk Jalg (Long Leg) street. We have a short stop by Holy Spirit Church, a landmark in Estonian history. The first written record of the Estonian language were written in this church.
On our way we will enjoy the view of the Great Guild House, building of the Russian Embassy, the house of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads, Town Hall square , Rae Pharmacy, Vanaturu kael (old market place), Katarina’s Gateway – the handicraft street holding medieval guild traditions.
Our final stop will be at the medieval Dominican Monastery, one of the best-kept secrets of Tallinn located in the very center of the city. To reach Tallinn the friars followed the trade route along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea, and reached Estonia some 750 years ago. The monastery in Tallinn was certainly in existence by 1246. Constructed in gothic style, it exhibits a number of Interesting architectural features, and contains the largest collection of carved stones in Estonia.
After the visit to the monastery your guide will return you to the ship.
